Morland - Little Strickland Hall

About midway between Lowther and Shap, and a little to the left of the road and railway, lies the village of Little Strickland. In the olden time it was written Stirkland. Great Strickland had its manorial hall in Melkinthrope Hall, but Little Strickland had its manorial hall, standing on the rocky rising ground abutting on the village green. It is small but interesting, inasmuch as it has suffered little from alteration. The exterior dates from Henry VIII.'s reign (1612), but the interior is of the later Elizabethan period. The builder of the hall was John, younger son of Henry Crackenthrope, of Newbiggin Hall, and is in the form of the letter T. The chief items of interest are the plaster work, especially the decorative ceiling of the lord's parlour, and the carved oak mantlepiece and fittings.
